Thoughts on Sermon Preparation

I have frequently heard men express reservations about listening to other men’s sermons on a particular passage upon which they are preparing to preach. While I understand the desire to do one’s own work and to wrestle with the text before God, I find it hard to believe that the same individuals would not read commentaries or written sermons on the passage they will preach. Why then is there a reservation in regard to listening to sermons? It might be an overly scrupulous desire to be careful not to plagerize, …

Phil Ryken is the New President of Wheaton

Big news, as one of my mentors, Phil Ryken, accepts the call to be the new President of Wheaton College. You can read about it here, here and here. Pray for Tenth Presbyterian Church as they will now need to find someone suitable to replace such a faithful and gifted man.

Jonathan Edwards’ Sermon Index

The Jonathan Edwards Center at Yale University has made a sermon index for Jonathan Edwards’ sermons available. One of the first places I go when I am preparing a sermon is to the Yale University Press volumes of Edwards’ sermons, the Miscellanies, and Notes on Scripture. The indices in the Yale publications are invaluable sources for Edwards research. Below is the list of sermons in canonical order (Many of the sermons are also available there):

Genesis
Exodus
Leviticus
Numbers
Deuteronomy

Tim Keller Interview on Idols of the Heart

We recently had the opportunity to talk with Dr. Tim Keller about his newest book Counterfeit God’s: The Empty Promises of Money, Sex and Power and the Only Hope that Matters. Dr. Keller argues quite persuasively that all sin is in fact heart idolatry. We were created to worship and serve the true and living God. If we are not worshiping Him we will always put something or someone in His place. This is no less true of the minister of the Gospel than it is of anyone else. In …

Calvin College and Seminary Post-Reformation Digital Library

The H. Henry Meeter Center for Calvin Studies has provided us with this amazing website full of free online resources. They have organized and linked an enormous number of important historical Reformed, Lutheran, Roman Catholic, Anabaptist, Arminian-Remonstrant, and Socinian-Unitarian works, as well as many other secondary sources for serious theological studies. This is the most comprehensive collection of free online PDF theological resources. It will be, without a doubt, a massively important site for those interested in pre-20th Century studies. The foolish man will ignore such treasures, but the wise …

Building a Reformed Theological Library Online

Wes White has done a great service of gathering links to many theological works with which every Reformed minister should be familiar. Wes explains the nature of the list below:
“Most of these works are from the continent, with a few exceptions.  I have focused on these works because others have done a good job cataloging and making available Puritan literature on the web.  All works are in English unless otherwise noted.
Some of the works are on Gallica, the online library of the French national library.  For the Gallica documents, select …

O. Palmer Robertson On The Church in the Wilderness

There are certain theologians who have such a remarkable grasp on the biblical theological themes of Scripture that each and every new work is eagerly anticipated and joyfully welcomed. O. Palmer Robertson is one such theologian. With the release of his newest publication, God’s People in the Wilderness: The Church in Hebrews, Robertson has produced a succinct yet substantive treatment of the significance of the wilderness theme in the book of Hebrews, and specifically with regard to the New Testament church.

Guy Richard Interview on Samuel Rutherford

Samuel Rutherford is one of the most important figures in church history. His love for Christ, heart for the people of God, and theological contributions make Rutherford exceedingly worthy of our considerations. It is for this reason that I wish to highlight the most recent Christ the Center interview with Rev. Guy Richard. Guy Richard, senior minister of First Presbyterian Church in Gulfport, MS, did his doctoral work on Rutherford’s  Examen Arminianus–Rutherford’s most comprehensive systematic theology–at the University of Edinburgh, New College. I believe you will find the interview to …
